EXTRUSION TECHNOLOGIES FOR
MEDICAL DEVICE APPLICATIONS

Polyzen’s team of engineers leverage extrusion technologies and customize films to enhance a variety of medical applications:

Cast Film

Cast film extrusion enables a high degree of precision and customizable material properties, including softness, stretchiness, lubricity/coefficient of friction, and opacity.

Cast film is commonly used for a variety of cardiovascular applications, including catheter sheathes, cardiac catheterization, angioplasty, and coronary artery bypass.

Other applications for cast film include medical balloons such as low-pressure ballons for catheter systems and balloons for gastric, stent deployment, dilation, occlusion, positioning, drug-eluting, and counterpulsation applications. It can also be used for probe covers and medical bags, from fluid containment and management systems to single-use bags for blood, tissue, or organ-specific applications.

The process: raw plastic is melted and formed into a continuous profile to yield a sheet of film.

Tubular Film

Extrusion of tubular film, or lay flat or blown film, is used to produce a seamless 2D configuration of film that lies flat or collapses when not in use. Due to its uniformity and smoothness, tubular film can help prevent irritation or infection during medical procedures. These characteristics also make it easy to cut.

Tubular film can be used for applications such as barrier sheathes, catheter sheathes or liners, and probe tips and covers.

The process: raw plastic is melted and blown into a lay flat, 2D sheath.

Laminated Film

Laminated films enable manufacturers to combine multiple layers of a variety of materials to create films that offer durability, strength, electrical integration, and barrier properties.

Applications include catheter systems and membrane sheets, barrier films, and high-pressure systems (e.g., balloons and bladders). Laminated films also can be embedded with materials such as meshes, fabrics, and metallic layers to enhance strength and functionality in medical, aerospace, and industrial applications.

The process: multiple layers of films are thermally heated to create a single sheet.
