MATERIAL FORMULATION & CONSULTATION

MEDICAL DEVICE
MATERIAL SELECTION, FORMULATION,
& CONSULTATION

Material selection is the foundation for every successful medical device. In addition to performance properties, each material must be suitable for processing, compatibility with other device components, economics, and much more. Additionally, medical device materials must meet the regulatory requirements for the given device class, both during the approval process and throughout the production lifecycle.

Polyzen offers unparalleled expertise in material science, formulation, and the application of a broad range of medical polymers.

Our team’s decades of experience in the medical device industry, combined with our in-depth knowledge of medical-grade polymers, makes us a preferred partner of medical-industry OEMs worldwide.

Our goal is to help customers select the best materials for each medical device, including physical properties, processing characteristics, regulatory compliance, compatibility with other materials throughout the device, and value. Polyzen has selected and/or developed the appropriate material for over 75% of our various projects.

Our in-house polymer experts specialize in all types of standard and custom formulations for medical-industry applications. We regularly recommend formulations of polyurethanes, thermoplastic elastomers, polyamides, polyesters, EVA and olefins, fluoropolymers, and silicones, just to name a few. Our capabilities also include an array of specialty additives, radiopaque, pigments, and other fillers, as well as functional coatings, bioabsorbable materials, and drug/polymer combinations. No matter what the customer’s unique needs or the challenges of their application, our material formulation expertise adds value to every project and helps ensure success.

When it comes to custom and specialty polymers, we have proven experience with heat and UV stabilizers, UV and electron-beam crosslinkable polymers, low-COF additives, and materials with high/low moisture vapor transmission rates (MVTR). Plus our layering and coating capabilities enable us to offer barrier-layer formulations as well as hydrophilic, antimicrobial, and antithrombogenic coatings, among others.

The Polyzen team also specializes in technologies to improve the surface of polymer components and maximize device functionality. These technologies include:

  • Hydrophilic coatings that reduce the friction of devices that contact human tissue or fluids
  • Antimicrobial coatings that reduce bacterial colonization on devices
  • Antithrombogenic coatings that reduce blood clotting
  • Conductive polymers that provide electric charge for sensing or energy emittance
  • Radiopaque coatings that increase visibility of devices under fluoroscopy
  • And much more
